About Tanmoy
Since September 2022, Tanmoy has held the position of Associate Professor in the Department of
Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), India. Additionally,
he serves as an Associate Faculty Member at the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence, IIT Delhi.
He is an ACM Distinguished Speaker (2023-2025) and was a Ramanujan Fellow from 2018-2023. Before
joining IIT Delhi, he served as an Assistant Professor (May 2017 - Dec 2021) and an Associate
Professor (Jan 2022 - Sep 2022) in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at IIIT
Delhi, India. He also served as the head of the Infosys Centre for Artificial Intelligence (CAI) at
IIIT Delhi. Tanmoy obtained his Ph.D. as a Google India Ph.D. scholar from the Department of CSE,
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India, in September 2015. Following this, he joined the
University of Maryland, College Park, as a Postdoctoral Researcher. His broad research interests
include Natural Language Processing, Graph Neural Networks, and Social Computing. His current research includes designing tiny, frugal, and explainable industry-level LLMs (reasoning, knowledge grounding, prompting, editing, etc.) and applying them to various applications, including mental health and cyber-informatics.
He established and is currently leading the Laboratory for Computational
Social Systems
(LCS2) research group.
Tanmoy has secured over 100 million INR in funding from both industry and government agencies. This
includes support from companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Samsung, Flipkart,
Logically and IBM, and government agencies such as DST, SERB, MHA, and DRDO. Apart from this, he
also received numerous faculty awards from industries including Google, Adobe, IBM, Accenture and JP
Morgan. He was one of the project directors whose leadership secured 1000 Million INR for IIIT Delhi
to establish iHub Anubhuti-IIITD Foundation, a Technology Innovation Hub.

Research Interests
Tanmoy broadly works in Natural Language Processing, Social Computing, and Graph Neural Networks.
Currently, his research focuses on enhancing the capabilities of small-scale and frugal language models
and applying them to various application domains such as healthcare, cyber-informatics, and climate
towards deployable solutions. Below, you find some of the areas which his lab is actively exploring.
Large Language Models
His research on Large Language Models (LLMs) is motivated by the objective of enriching the
capabilities of frugal language models and making these ‘black-box’ models more transparent and
understandable. His lab is currently working on enhancing their reasoning capabilities and
in-context learning abilities, grounding them in task-specific knowledge, and optimizing their
efficiency for real-world deployment through model compression techniques like knowledge
distillation. Another focal point of his research is to understand how LLMs function. His lab has
been looking into the internal mechanisms of these models that manifest emergent abilities like
Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning, multilingual in-context learning, etc.
Cyber-informatics
His social computing research focuses on various aspects of malicious online content, particularly
hateful and misinformed posts. His work is not limited to text and topological features but extends
to multimodal setups like harmful memes. Through analysis of dangerous content on the web, he aims
to model and counter the spread of such content, empowering content moderators with semi-automated
tools.
AI for Mental Health
He focuses on various aspects of mental health, broadly on counselling-based therapy, intervention,
and psychotherapy using AI and NLP. He has contributed to the identification of dialogue acts and
summarization of mental health counselling conversation. This work is further extended to
aspect-based summarization based on counselling components. Other works include the identification
of mental health symptoms aided by gender information from Reddit conversation data, which he
extended further to mental health dialogue generation guided by dialogue acts. Apart from these
works, his lab is constantly expanding its horizon by shifting towards cognitive and neuropsychiatry
by collaborating with mental health experts. Furthermore, he is also venturing into the menstrual
health, sexual health and suicide intervention-related domains by collaborating with NGOs for the
grass-root level reach and outsourcing.
